ORIGINS OF THE MALUTI-A-PHOFUNG SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONE

Maluti-A-Phofung Special Economic Zone (MAP-SEZ) is an initiative of the South African government, supported by the Department of Trade and Industry to establish manufacturing opportunities and creating a regional and international trade environment with added value chain within the Free State Province. The main objective of the Maluti-A-Phofung Special Economic Zone is to attract foreign and direct investment and to stimulate the local economy as well as creating meaningful work opportunities for the people of the Free State as whole, in particular the Maluti-A-Phofung region. The special economic zone will further provide support to local businesses, skills transfer and hopefully accelerate the establishment of manufacturing activities in creating local and international trade with value added benefits.

The Maluti-A-Phofung Special Economic Zone was designated in February 2016 as a public entity and granted an operater permit to operate within the mandate of the SEZ act of 2014, Regulations and apllicable laws.

Symbolic to its designation, The Maluti-A-Phofung Special Economic Zone was oficially launched by the President of South Africa, Mr. Jacob Zuma on 25 April 2017 thereby allowing it to operate legally as a Special Economic Zone.
